Reassignment of consonant allophones in rapid dialect acquisition

چکیده
In an experiment spanning a week, American English speakers imitated a Glaswegian (Scottish) English speaker. The target sounds were allophones of /t/ and /r/, as the Glaswegian speaker aspirated word-medial /t/ but pronounced /r/ as a flap initially and medially. This experiment therefore explored (a) whether speakers could learn to reassign a sound they already produce (flap) to a different phoneme, and (b) whether they could learn to reliably produce aspirated /t/ in an unusual phonological context. Speakers appeared to learn systematically, as they could generalize to words which they had never heard the Glaswegian speaker pronounce. The pattern for /t/ was adopted and generalized with high overall reliability (96%). For flap, there was a mix of categorical learning, with the allophone simply switching to a different use, and parametric approximations of the “new” sound. The positional context was clearly important, as flaps were produced less successfully when word-initial. And although there was variety in success rates, all speakers learned to produce a flap for /r/ at least some of the time and retained this learning over a week’s time. These effects are most easily explained in a hybrid of neogenerative and exemplar models of speech perception and production.

Assimilation of Final Low Back Vowel in Eghlidian Dialect
In this article, the low back vowel /A/ in word-final positions in Eghlidian dialect, one of Persian dialects, is studied. This vowel is represented phonetically as [A], [o] and [@] in different phonetic environments. Therefore many words were collected via interviewing ten native speakers so that these different alternant forms can be accounted for appropriately. Since one of the authors of th...
متن کاملA Panphonic Version of the Text of 'The North Wind and the Sun' for the Illustration of the IPA of Japanese (Tokyo Dialect) Consonants
The text of ‘The North Wind and the Sun’ used to illustrate Japanese in the Handbook of the International Phonetic Association 1999 has been modified to create a ‘panphonic’ version of the text. The new text is 30% longer than the original text, but embraces, compactly and efficiently, all 16 consonant phonemes, their 11 major positional allophones and 5 free variants that can replace positiona...
متن کاملOptimality Theoretic Account of Acquisition of Consonant Clusters of English Syllables by Persian EFL Learners*
This study accounts for the acquisition of the consonant clusters of English syllable structures both in onset and coda positions by Persian EFL learners. Persian syllable structure is "CV(CC)", composed of one consonant at the initial position and two optional consonants at the final position; whereas English syllable structure is "(CCC)V(CCCC)". Therefore, Persian EFL learners need to resolve...
متن کاملThe Acquisition of Plosives and Implosives by a Fulfulde-speaking Child Aged from 5 to 10;29 Months
This paper reports an analysis of the acquisition of plosives and implosives by a Fulfulde monolingual child aged from 5 months to 10 months and 29 days. Analyses revealed that before 11 months the child was making use of complex consonant-like implosives and prenasal plosives. We provided new aerodynamic analyses of adult‟s implosive /ɓ/. These aerodynamic data revealed that in Fulfulde this p...
متن کاملGradient phonemic contrast in Nanjing Mandarin
Sounds that are contrastive in a language are rated by listeners as being more different from each other than sounds that don’t occur in the language or sounds that are allophones of a single phoneme. The study reported in this paper replicates this finding and adds new data on the perceptual impact of learning a language with a new contrast. Two groups of speakers of the Nanjing dialect of Man...
